Mathaichan sees his mother standing in the courtyard. She is about to say something to his father. His maternal uncle is also standing nearby. Having observed the scene, when Mathaichan took an analytical look at his mother, he wondered if it was his own mother standing there.

What made you think so? “Guru asked.”

‘Guru, had I been attributing my own impressions on her?’

‘On whom?’

On that woman standing there.

‘Why?’

Where the Hell is the Elephant

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

The scene is a circus tent. Mathaichan is seated behind two mod boys. A band is playing lending the scene a festive mood. There come elephants, horses and infantry, followed by clowns. It’s a colourful march past. There stands a majestic, caparisoned elephant. It holds aloft a skimpily clad beautiful girl in its trunk. She displays her shapely body to the audience with a plastic smile on her lips.

As the elephant come into full view, the two boys jump out of their seats. They have to have a closer look. One was a prospective veterinary student. Entranced by the elegance of the elephant, that would put even Guruvayur Kesavan to shame, he jerks awake his friend, seemingly lost in thought, and asks, “Buddy, didn’t you see that elephant?”

Suddenly woken up from the trance, the buddy asked, “Where the hell is the elephant?” he saw only the damsel.

“You, Mathaicha, do you get the point?”

The Five Fingers

‘Mathaichan stood at the gates of Guruvayoor Temple like an alien.’

‘May I go in to have a look!’

‘Why not? Guruvayoor Appan is father to all of us.’

‘But then I’m a Christian- Mathaichan.’

Why the hell did you mention that? Now, who can let you in?

The honest Mathaichan walked back like an honourable man. He thought about his grand daughter, the ten year old little Glory. One day she said, “Granny, Johnson my best boy friend asked me if he could kiss me”.

When He Came Back

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

A young man with flowing hair and beard. Blue eyes. Young man. May be thirty-two. Strong muscular forearms. Broad chest. There was tranquility on his handsome face. Merciful piercing look

He walked into Psychologist Mathaichan’s clinic.

“Please be seated, the Psychologist said pointing to a chair.

“Good thank you”

“Where do you come from?”

He thought for a while and said, I come from my father’s abode.

“Where’s that?”

Don’t Sleep! Mathai 2

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

“Mind you, Mathaicha!”

“Yes? Master”.

“With whom have you talked most in your life?”

“What? Why, Guru, such mind-boggling questions in the very morning….” Mathai reflected. Still the question is interesting.

The Gospel according to psychologist Mathai

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

“You, Mathai, if I say that you are a naïve fellow will you deny that?”

‘What is this Guru?’ It sounds like questions that echo in courts. If I were to put back the same question to you, will you deny?

“I’ll.”

Then I’ll say within. Is not what he says true too? Some of my disciples prostrate before me to have their way.

Sycophants!

If you tell them something useful, they’ll extract some more and become Gurus themselves. He’ll become a director or a leader himself and publicize all my defects and defaults, justifying himself.

Our Own Old Bar

Kovalan is from Kothazham village. A real Gopalakrishnan. An apple of the villager’s eyes. Kovalan, if he becomes famous will be called Kothazham Kovalan. A debauchee, each move of his gives the impression that he wants to enjoy life to its tilt. Everybody needed him. An agile, jolly good fellow. He is capable of engaging anyone in a conversation and a master at making quick retorts. Extremely courteous as he was he greeted everyone with such a rare warmth that he was loved by everyone. His favourite costume was a single dhothi and a towel.

Evergreen Mathaichan

“Guru!”

“Hey, Mathaicha, what brings you here so early in the morning?”

Old age has come upon me, Guru!”

‘’How do you know you’re getting old? “

“You know only too well. Till yesterday I was busy with my office work, sometimes I even bring work home. I used to nag and chide the subordinates and harass them with numerous queries. Whichever way I turned, I was showered with flowers of respect. Everyone around called me ‘saar’,’saar’. Even at home to put on air I used to hand over the whole pay packet to my wife, being away from home for more than half the day. Now, half pay and full boring presence for them I never had the time to sit and relax quietly, Guru! “

Why are you like this?

Like what?

So perverse

In which way?

Like… dissidence, arrogance.

Furious, insolent, riotous

He made me so.

Who?

My father.

What do you mean?
